Nov 15 Welcome speech
Yang bahagia Ketua Pengarah, Perpustakaan Negara, Dato Nafisah Ahmad, invited guests, ladies and gentlemen.
Terima kasih dan Selamat datang.
***Great morning to you all.
I am very encourage by your presence despite the unfavourable weather. Give yourself a round of applause. Please tell your neighbours that they are truly awesome.***
On this beautiful morning I am here to launch my book, Cancer my wake up call. I am James oh, the author of the book. I am also the founder of Lift You Up, a training entity specialising in finance, value creation and thinking skill.
It is a great joys to share this memorable event with you. Thank you for taking your valuable time to be here.
When I was first diagnosed with stage 3 stomach cancer, I went around searching for a book on it but I couldn’t find any that I could relate to. That was when the idea was mooted. As I progressed into my chemotherapy treatments the side effects were becoming more and more intense.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Many of you must be wondering If you are suffering how then can you write? Yes I was suffering but I also needed to divert my mind from the numbness-in my limbs, itchy scaly skin, nausea, vomiting, bleeding and so on. Thus in the midst of my chemotherapy I embarked on this book.
I decided to share my experience as it was still fresh in my mind, hoping that it will give some pointers and tips to my fellow sufferers as well the general public.
Even when my mind was hazy from the toxins of chemotherapy, I was aware of my social obligation. I wanted to show the community that even though I am a cancer patient. I Still Care!! I made up my mind if my book is ever published, I will donate a small portion of the sales proceeds to the cancer community.
My dear fellow sufferers, let us stand high and make the world a better place. Do not let this illness bring us down. Explore and see how we can contribute. The world does not end with cancer. It is just
a temporary setback.
Once again please allow me to extend my heartfelt thanks to PN n all of u who are present today. Your presence means a lot to me.
Thank you PN for your generosity for providing the venue as well as the delicious meal.
Before I leave this stage, I would like to leave this advice
Cancer does not kill
Early detection will save your life!!!

Cancer : My Wake Up Call
Once again my heartfelt thanks to PN and all who present today
Yang berbahagia Dato Nafisah Ahmad, Ketua Pengarah , ladies and gentlemen
Once again my heartfelt thanks to PN for hosting my book launch.
Allow me a few minutes to share my journey to battle Cancer. Will I be victorious? Time will tell
Ladies and Gentlemen,
How do you perceive Cancer? Is it a demoralizing and destructive illness? How many of you think it is? Please raise your hands.
How many of you think otherwise?
One of my worst nightmare was on July 24 2017 when I was told I had the big C... of the stomach after undergoing endoscopy. Imagine my dismay and desperation!!! Prior to the diagnosis I had consulted my family doctor when I began to have bloating, loss of appetite, tiredness and stomach discomfort. However, the doctor assured me that everything was alright and prescribed me gastric reflux medication. He neither referred me to a specialist nor advised me to do an endoscopy.
Now, I like to share with you some tips I have undertaken to counter the side effects of my surgery and 12 cycles of chemotherapy successfully despite experiencing a very bad start.
1. Stay positive and calm
To battle against this fearful illness, I need to stay positive and calm especially when I was having nausea and vomiting terribly during my first chemotherapy. It was like going through hell. I was very frustrated and felt like giving up. I was unsure whether chemotherapy was going to cure me or kill me with it’s toxins. I am glad that I am able to stay calm n positive at this crucial time
I have no clue as to how to overcome it as I can’t find anyone with similar type of cancer with the same treatment to explain to me what lies ahead.
I had to go through the trials and tribulations on my own n with guidance from God.
On another occasion, the increased dosage of Xeloda led to a drop in my platelet count n caused bleeding when I passed motion as the blood could not clot. I was calm enough and managed to contact all the relevant experts for their appropriate advice.
2. Beef up and not give up
When I opted for surgery to remove part of my stomach, I thought that was the end of my problem. Of course I still had to go for chemotherapy. I only realised later that t functions of t other organs of my body would be affected as a result of t surgery. Surgery was the best option to remove t tumour. To ensure my body can function properly, I had to cultivate proper eating habits, proper diet and have sufficient intake of vitamin and minerals such as Vitamin B 12, iron, calcium and Folate. These supplements had to be either taken orally or injected regularly.
3. Look at it from the right perspective.
This was exactly what happened to me when I was told by the doctor that I had the big C....I was not ready to accept the diagnosis at that time. Calm yourself to have sufficient confidence to deal with any issue that may arise. This is where I need to draw on my past success to boost up my confidence level.
4. Be open and never limit your mind especially when you are faced with endless challenges. The cumulative side effects of chemotherapy came one after another. To survive, I had to explore all the possibilities like alternative treatment such as daily prayers, bagua qigong and Detox diets to continue the battle with more confidence. I don’t believe that we can live without hope.
I was fortunate enough to have a caring wife, siblings, friends and Cell group members who constantly urged me to stay positive and through prayers. Never isolate yourself, but seek external help if possible such as Hospis (A NGO body which offers help to cancer patients) or share with other cancer survivors
Lastly, I believe I was well guided by God who enable me to survive the darkest days of my life
I have two fold intentions for this book. First, to share my insightful experience with my fellow cancer patients with the intention to offer them an inspiration and view this adversity as a bend, not the end. Always remember there is no rainbow without a storm, as reflected in the book cover.
Secondly, it is to donate a small portion of the sales proceed to the cancer Community through book sales, as a living proof that we can live independently and financially through our labour of love. Let us unite together and turn this adversity into an opportunity.
It further affirms; the big C ....cannot cripple love, It cannot shatter hope, It cannot corrode faith, if you decide to choose it as an inspiration as I did.
Thank you so much for listening.

Great morning to you all. Very nice weather we have today. I am very grateful to all of you who took this beautiful morning off to attend this event.
I would like to thank Perpustakaan Negara for giving me the opportunity to launch and share with you the contents of my book today.
I would also like to thank you my friends for coming along. Hi Jimmy Ch’ng, thanks for coming. Hi Soo Hoo, long time no see! For those who doesn’t know me. I am James Oh and am proud to present my book here ‘Çancer: My wake up call’.

A brief history about me. I started Lift You Up Plt nearly two years ago, a training company specialising in finance, wealth creation and thinking skills. Our mission is to inspire and motivate you to be well equipped to meet any challenges to accomplish your passions. The journey Lift You Up had given me as much motivation as it had given the people and my clients. This is my sole reason why I can stand proud today.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
How do you perceive Cancer? Is it a demoralizing and destructive illness? How many of you think it is. Please raise your hands. How many of you think otherwise?
To be honest, I was as fearful when I hear the news as I cannot imagine how I could survive without a stomach. But in fact, it is not as fearful. This is because I lack knowledge of this illness at that time.
It all began when I constantly had stomach discomfort and my stomach was always bloated as if there were lots of wind in my stomach even though I took small amount of food. I did consult my family doctor but he always assured me that everything was alright and prescribed me medication for gastric re flux for nearly a month. However I continue to experience a lack of appetite, bloating in my tummy and tiredness. My daughter kept pushing me to consult a specialist.
Subsequently, on July 24, 2017, I was advised to go for an endoscopy after the unfavourable result of my blood test. The diagnosis after endoscopy was a high possibility of the big C..... of the stomach.
On August 1, 2017 when I was told by the Gastronomic doctor that I had the big C... I was baffled and was not ready to accept the facts at that time. I was shocked beyond words. Finally, I came to my senses and could not help but shed some tears. Why me? Why me! I cried silently to God. What did I do to deserve this?
After berating myself for some time, I realised that asking why would not solve anything. I have to look for treatment and to get rid of this unpleasant tumour in my stomach. The doctor found a tumour which was about 5 to 6 cm, located at the bottom of my stomach and also covered part of my intestine making it difficult for food to pass through. This explained the bloating of my tummy. The CT scan showed also that the tumour had also spread to my pancreas.
Ladies and gentlemen
I am not going to lie, treating cancer is indeed extremely costly. It does not only require surgery but also other treatments for example chemotherapy, radiotherapy and so on. It is going to take a long time and also costs a lot of money. If you do not have insurance, it is going to drain your pocket. Yes there will be tremendous side effects too. I was in a dilemma. How was I going to tell my family especially the two kids who needed me to fund their tertiary education? A myriad of questions flashed through my mind. I was devastated and unable to deal with this situation. I prayed to the Lord to calm me down before I drove home.
A CT and MRI Scan were then done. I had to consult a surgeon and the Gastrologist insisted that I should have an operation soonest possible. A major operation was done to remove 60% of my stomach together with some parts of the pancreas and fourteen lymph nodes on August 14. With a
smaller stomach, I can only eat less but more often. I also need to chew my food properly for easy digestion, instead of my bad habit of walloping my meal. You see I now have the luxury of slowly enjoying my food.
However 3 out 14 of my lymph nodes were found to be cancerous. I had waited too long for the diagnosis and the cancer has spread from the stomach to other organs. The surgery was not the end of my journey. I had to consult an oncologist to discuss follow up treatments.
I went to see a few oncologists and finally made the decision to have the chemotherapy done at University Malaya Specialist Centre (UMSC)’s private wing.
My first chemotherapy was not a smooth one. The drip caused numbness to my arm. After that I suffered nausea and vomiting. It was like going through hell. I felt like giving up. I shared with other big C....patients and they confirmed they too experienced similar effects.
Thanks God for sustaining and guiding me to seek help from Hospis (A NGO organization which offer medical assistance to cancer patients.). They came and gave me some steroid injections. Slowly, all the discomforts and sufferings dissipated. As a result I lost a further 3 kg a week after my first chemotherapy. After that I stopped the treatment with consent from my oncologist and decided to look for alternative treatment.
However, after 3 weeks my oncologist asked me to return. He was very disappointed with me and gave me an ultimatum to continue or not. If I continue he told me my survival rate would only be 20% based on the latest findings from more than 10,000 stomach patients of various stages. He foresee that I was going to crash soon. I had at most 6 months to a year to live. So depressing!
I strongly believe that God will be merciful to me and allow me to be in the 20% group who survived.
I decided to persevere and have great confidence that my Lord will give me the required strength to pull through in order that I can inspire and motivate others to ease their journey. Praise The Lord. My Subsequent 3 treatments went smoothly.
However after the 3rd treatment my oncologist decided to increase my dosage in view of my near perfect blood test results and performance. The toxins from the drug have affected my liver as seen from the blood test. I was given supplements for a month to protect my liver. However, the increased dosage of Xeloda led my platelet counts to drop. This led to bleeding when I passed motion as the blood could not clot. As a result my surgeon prescribed additional meditation and supplement to help increase the platelet level.
I have two fold intentions for these books. First, to share my insightful experience with my fellows with the intention to offer them an inspiration and view this adversity as a bend, not the end. Always remember there is no rainbow without a storm, as reflected in the book cover.

Summary of Cancer: My Wake Up Call
Mr. James Oh is a cancer survivor in his fifties. His book Cancer: My Wake Up Call, published by Silverfish. Books details his journey from the time he was diagnosed with stage-3 stomach cancer, and the trials and tribulations he went through during his treatments.
This book is about James’s challenges and side effects of chemotherapy and surgery, his overwhelming dilemma of having to choose the best treatment from so many possibilities in a very short time as his cancer cells then were very aggressive, eventually opting for the holistic approach, and all the time seeking God’s guidance.
He relates how his illness served him his wake-up call to change his sedentary lifestyle to a more active and healthy one, how with his smaller stomach after surgery, he eats less but more frequently, walking 100 steps after meal, and incorporating qigong and meditation into his new life style.
Eventually, James lost 60% of his stomach and suffered intense and horrific side effects of chemotherapy. He relates how he initially wanted to give up when his oncologist presented him with the current dismal statistics; only 20% of the patients survived more than five years after completing their chemotherapy.
But he was confident that God was with him. To distract his mind from the bad news, he decided to pen this book. He hopes that it will give readers some tips on how to battle fearful illnesses like the Big-C, and to share lessons he has learned from this journey. Also, not forgetting his social obligations, he is committed to donate a percentage of proceeds from the sales of this book to the Cancer Community.
He affirms that the importance of his 4Gs approach that helped him combat the negative emotions of anger, fear and frustration and move forward into the dark unknown territory in cheer.
It was indeed a blessing that he was able to see things from the appropriate perspective.
It took him enormous courage to break news of his illness to his beloved family, at a time when his two younger children were still depending on him for financial support.
The author believes that he can reap the fruits of the rainbow when he completes this James’s entire painful journey is reflected by the painting on the cover of the book, with the dark foreboding trees representing his suffering and fear, and the rainbow his ultimate reward. His victory or otherwise was dependent only on God's mercy and grace. Nothing is impossible with God.

Review - Cancer : My Wake-up Call by Dylon Wong
Review - Cancer : My Wake-up Call
As I go through this book chapter by chapter, it makes my heart beat faster and faster each time as I anticipated James reaction to his battle with his biggest test of his life, the stomach cancer.
I have the privilege to journey with James as a fellow believer in Christ and God had our path crossed by divine appointment from the moment he was well to the time when he was first diagnosed with stomach cancer.
As a body of Christ, the cell group came together to rally our prayers and support for James and his immediate family throughout the surgery, chemotherapy and healing process. It was not easy to see and hear his ups and downs even though we are not the one facing all the trials and tribulations.
If I may visualise what James went through, it would be like a man sitting in a small boat facing a giant Tsunami wave coming his way. He has got an option, either to row away from the raging waves or to steer his boat in the direction of the waves. James has chosen the latter and I believed he did it because he knew that his maker, Jesus is in the same boat together with him all the time. And with that he had nothing to fear, not even the rampaging Tsunami waves!
His testimony of trust and faith in his almighty God will be a great game changer for many who are suffering from cancer. His determination and supernatural strength will be an inspiration to others so that they can also learn what he went through.
At the end, one single statement that I can draw from reading this book “With God, nothing is impossible!” Trust that you will be blessed by reading James’s honest sharing of his life and struggles. James Oh, the young shepherd boy who defeated Goliath the giant soldier with just a sling and a stone.

NUMBNESS IN MY LIMBS
numbness in my limbs
“Tackling challenges... Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” Joshua J. Marine
A person may feel numbness in their legs and feet due to sitting in a position that puts too much pressure on the nerves or reduces blood flow.
However this is definitely not the reason why I am suffering from numbness. Mine is the result of the accumulation of toxins as a
result of repeated courses of chemotherapy.
It was indeed a great blessing when Dato introduced me to this acupuncturist. Since June 2018, I have gone for 18 sessions of acupuncture to date. When I mentioned that I look forward to completing my chemotherapy, I was not aware that other side effects would still linger on. Now I am still experiencing numbness and have resorted to acupuncture to try to lessen if not completed healed it. As such now I still subjected to needles pricking me albeit a different set. I am looking forward to the day when I am completely free of needles. I have faith that the Lord will grant me this pleasure soon.
Thank God for giving me the courage to try acupuncture. It has been both amazing and awesome as the treatment has begun to bear results. One glaring improvement that I have noticed is my ability to handle a pair of chopsticks. Before that I could not even hold the chopsticks to eat my noodles but now I have regained that skill though not completely. Thank you very much to the acupuncturist who has been very patient to treat me and has helped to restore the sensory system of my body.
As my numbness decreases, my confidence increases. Now i have no fear of driving. I can drive anywhere with much confidence now. Hence, it does not pose any danger to myself as well as to other motorists. I am also very glad to note that my legs are slowly gaining back the strength. I can stand firmer on the ground than before. Praise the Lord for giving me wisdom to choose the appropriate treatment.
Life is full of challenges but every issue has a solution. Have faith and have the courage to step out even in the midst of the storm.
Everything will work out fine if you have the patience and faith. Never give up. Get up from where you fall and start again. The choice is yours; to win or to fall.

BOOK REVIEW BY T SANMUGA
"Everyone faces their trials and tribulations differently - few, if any, have had the strength and determination that James Oh took on in his fight against cancer.
Reading about his experience is both humbling and inspiring. One's faith in the human spirit is renewed upon learning about what he went through. There definitely is a lot left in James to come." T Sanmuga, Managing Editor,

Cancer : My Wake Up Call
As I reflect after completing 12 courses of chemotherapy, I realised that being infected with Cancer has given me a rude awakening. It will serve as a wake up call for me not to take everything for granted. It has also brought me closer to God and has strengthened my faith towards Him.
I now have God walking beside me and clearing the path for me. There is no Fear, Doubts and Bondages in my heart anymore as He will cleanse all these impurities from my heart. His grace and mercy that He has bestowed on me is sufficient for me to overcome all these endless challenges. This adversity has renewed my ties with God.
I am very grateful to Him for giving me a second chance to live and I must assure Him that I will serve as a role model to others as well as to live my life harmoniously, happily and healthily.
I must also make sure that everything I do must glorify His name. I must be worthy of His faith in me. Amen.

Wow ! I found a lot of truth in the above. Praise The Lord.
While I was recovering from cancer, I found many areas of my life where I can look to God to lighten and enhance my journey. I found to my joy that I can depend on Him especially in this lesson where he taught Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in [your] weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Now I have a better understanding of this verse and I hope that my soon to be published book, Cancer : my walk Up Call, will enrich and inspire every reader. Praise The Lord.

ONER STEP CLOSER TO MY SON'S DREAM
Hi everyone,
I have some good news to share. My second son who will be leaving soon to complete education even thought he has applied under the normal track. Praise The Lord. The stress and anxiety is finally over as he can utilise his air ticket which was bought during the travel fair. I am so happy for my son as he can realise his dream soon. All the best, my dearest son.
Take care and study smart. The whole family is behind you giving you whatever support you need. Adios my son, we will see you next year to celebrate your convocation.
Thank you to everyone who has helped to make my son’s dream one step closer to reality. Dream on everyone for without dreams nothing can be achieved.
As a father I am both happy and proud to see my children achieve success. I would also like to urge other parents to always support and encourage your children to cultivate their passion and pursue their dreams.
Finally I like to wish everyone all the best and dream on. Let your passion fuel you working toward your dream and never underestimate the power of your dream. It has proven that all our human invention is driven by dream.
As a father of the family, l need to inspire and up lift my team members to unleash their individual potential. Every matured adult must take full responsibility of their own actions, but not simply adopting blaming culture

CANCER IS SO LIMITED
Cancer is so limited…
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot destroy peace.
It cannot kill friendship.
It cannot suppress memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot invade the soul.
It cannot steal eternal life.
It cannot conquer the spirit.
It cannot lessen the power of the resurrection.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT FOR MY LATEST BOOK, CANCER - MY WAKE UP CALL
ACKNOWLEDGMENT
Here I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me in one way or another in getting this book published.
Obviously this book is dedicated to my late father who had given me abundant freedom, and to my mother who has taught me love and kindness, other kind people who have touched, transformed and impacted my life significantly. Every book is a dream, whether big or small; short or long; obvious or hidden, before it becomes a reality.
Special thanks to Lawrence Loh, my long-time friend, who had lent his endless support from the beginning when the idea of writing was conceived at one of our meetings a couple of years ago when he said, “Let us do it.” Since then, I started to write and finally compiled them into books. This is my latest work and written to divert my mind from the side effects of chemotherapy.
Thanks to Doris Neo for allowing me to use her painting on my book cover.
Thanks also to those who have given support and endorsement of this book.
I would like to thank my sister for editing this work. I am grateful for her services.
Clinton Oh, my son, for his wonderful, brilliant and creative design work.
Finally, nothing would have been possible without the deep understanding and loving support from my family, especially my wife, Jennifer.
I must say that you all formed part of this Dream Team that had made this book a reality. I treasure each and everyone, every fan or reader for reading as well as sharing this book with those you care for, concern with and love dearly. Again, thank you so much for reading my work. Without you, I cannot fulfill my life purpose.
In line with the custom of saving the best for the final part, I hereby acknowledge and honour the presence of the Higher Being from whom I have received abundant gifts and enlightened insights.
Lastly I would like to apologise to those whose names I may have left out. I assure you that it was done unintentionally and not on purpose.
All my love
James Oh
MY IMPORTANT DATE
There are a few dates that will always remain in my memory. July 18, 2018 is one of them. Why do I consider this date important? This is the day when Hospis officially informed me that they have removed me from their mobile service as they were very satisfied with my progress in battling the big C... I had completed my chemotherapy and I was coping well.
I thank them wholeheartedly from the bottom of my heart for their unwavering commitment to nurture and care for not only me but all the C... patients who needed them. I would also like to express my gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all hospital staff who have bestowed their skills and knowledge in helping me through this journey. Without all these wonderful people my journey would not have been that smooth. I must also congratulate them on the top notch services that they have rendered especially in times of urgency.
The tender and loving care rendered to me when I was suffering from the horrendous side effects of the chemotherapy which made me throw up continuously and at a time when I wished that the earth will swallow me so that I can escape from the torments. Thank you for your speedy action to my call for help. It will forever be etched in my memories.
Cheers,
James Oh
