WORK-RELATED STRESS - IMPACT ON PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT

Topic: Work-Related Stress - Impact on Physical and Psychological Health and how to deal
              With it

Introduction:

Work-related stress is indeed a common phenomenon in 21st Century human living. What is uncommon is how stress factors impact human lives, our bodies and our psyches, how we react to work- related stress and whether these interventions help control and manage stress inducing situations in the work place or only serve to exacerbate them, taking them to such an extent that induces major phsuyical health illnesses or a complete mental breakdown requiring hospital admission and necessary medical treatment courses.
Indeed in this article, it is necessary to first consider the impact of work-related stress on physical health and well being, secondly, on psychological health and finally, and third and most importantly, how we could deal with such kinds of stress and overcome it for our own mental and physical health betterment, goodness and well being

How work-related stress impacts on physical health of people:
Stress in the work place can be caused due to number of factors, like deadlines, work pressures, overdose of official commitments, having to work under pressure or work which one dislikes and also increased anxieties and strain on human body system. While the causes of stress may be localized due to demands of the job, its impacts could be mild or serious, depending upon the nature, levels, intensity and duration of stress. Stress could also be short term or even long term, often given rise to number of physical ailments like hypertension, diabetes, stomach ulcers, migraines and headaches and could even support major ailments like heart disease, paralytic strokes and in extreme cases, even leading to cancers.
What is particularly disturbing about work related stress is that this promotes bad habits like uncontrolled use of tobacco, alcohol, drugs and unsafe sex.  Impacts of stress could give rise to major health risks arising from increased sugars, salts, alcohol, non prescribed drugs and tobacco in one’s system and could indeed be dangerous and fatal if not immediate corrected and medically resolved, since stress could also be primary causes of heart attacks and cerebral/body strokes.

How work-related stress impacts on psychological health of people:
Research have attributed major mental illnesses as a result of work related stress and the most important one is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), once an domain of war veterans and soldiers but now even affecting civilians. The main characteristic of this disorder or condition is that victims are still in the state of stress-response even when the stress causes are not there. Other impacts of work related stress are depression, anxiety neurosis, nervous breakdowns, insomnia, withdrawal symptoms and social apathy. Since the minds are the precursors of bodily events and disorders, adverse impacts of stress can affect both body and mind in many idiosyncratic and unknown ways. Interconnectivity between body and mind could also cause bodily afflictions to affect mind. Patients have been known to have imaginary and medically challenging, disconcerting pains, aches and other malaise when none really exist- all impacts of fight-or –flee strategies developed by human minds to cope with stress and its after effects.

How to deal effectively with work related stress and overcome it:

Strategy Number #1: Identify the specific cause of the stress and eliminate it:
It is important to know the real and not indirect sources and origins of the stress and remedy it as
soon as possible, before it could do further physical and mental harm.

Strategy Number #2: Seek professional help from a counselor, psychologist and /or psychiatrist:
They could offer therapy, medication and advice on how to best deal with work related stress. It
would also make coping less stressful and even address main issues that create and promote
stress in the workplace. Stress is indeed a person’s reactions to environment and human
overtures and therapy could make this less stressful and more relaxing

Strategy Number#3: If dependent on alcohol, tobacco, drugs or other stimulants abandon them:
All these could only exacerbate and aggravate current situation and needs to be abandoned
forthwith. Some kinds of work stresses could be remedied by these forfeitures.

Strategy Number #4: Practice relaxation techniques like Yoga, deep breathing, meditation,
T’ai chi, etc. It relaxes body, mind and spirit and makes you more receptive to positive
environmental stimulants, while purging away toxins of the body and mind.

Strategy Number # 5: Physical exercises do induce positive and soothing brain chemicals that act
on nerves and body. This could relieve some of the stress causing thoughts and relax body and
mind

Final word:

It is important that work related stress is given the degree of seriousness, weightage and importance it richly deserves. Ignoring stress symptoms and signs could indeed prove imprudent and ill advised, since stress is capable of causing more damage and detriment to body and mind that could ever be imagined by humans. It needs to be addressed before it turns uncontrollable and unmanageable through medical interventions and therapies.
