I am very pleased to see you here. Hope you are reaping benefits from reading the articles I have published from time to time, this is the impression you have given me which I am convinced with. 

In this connection, I would say that none of us can escape from others' evaluation and impression in our daily activities whether directly or indirectly. People tend to evaluate you especially when they meet you for the first time. Basically, they form an opinion about you based on your appearance, body language, demeanor, mannerisms, and how you are dressed as well. Therefore, it is clear that you are evaluated with every new encounter and another person’s impression of you is formed. These first impressions may be very difficult to reverse or undo, thus making  first encounters extremely important, for they will set the tone for the all the relationships that follows. So, to create a good first impression will help you to succeed in your social life or career.  This article will provide you some time-tested rules for helping you to have a good impression from others.

1. Be on Time

Punctuality is essential. Always remember that the person you are meeting, especially for the first time, is not interested in your excuse for being late. Plan to arrive early especially if you are unsure of the meeting venue. Allow some contingency for possible delays in traffic or taking a wrong turn. Prevention is better than cure. Therefore, arriving early is much better that arriving late. It is an undeniable first step in creating a great first impression. Similarly, you should never tolerate late arrivals and missed deadlines for yourself. Make it a habit and you will be rewarded.

2. Be Yourself, Be at Ease

Be yourself. If you are feeling uncomfortable, this too will make the other person ill at ease. On the other hand, if you are calm and confident, so the other person will feel more at ease. It is important to use your relaxation techniques to build a solid foundation so as to make that first impression a sound one. Make a point to be a good communicator, practise as much as possible so as to make it part of your habits. You must be aware of the fact that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to make something natural if you do not have enough practice. 

3. BEING TRUTHFUL

Truth establishes credibility. Needless to say that people prefer to deal with honest people. Most people can smell a lie, even if it's not exactly what they want to be hearing. So be wary of this crucial fact and do not make yourself a fool.

4. ATTENTIVE AND COURTEOUS

It goes without saying that good manners, polite, attentive and courteous behavior will help you make a good impression. We all know those people who talk always will not listen to what you are saying. We must show respect to others by listening to their talk. Any conversation should be two-sided interaction.

5. Be Positive

Your attitude reflects in everything you do. Project a positive attitude, even in the face of criticism or in the case of nervousness. Strive to learn from your meeting and to contribute appropriately, maintaining an upbeat manner and a smile because it is very natural for people to cling to positive attitude people.

6. Prepare Your Homework

Respect others. Do not waste people's time due to poor planning and thoughtlessness will certainly leave a bad impression. Do make it a point to do some research on those people in advance before you meet them for the first time. Flatter them if you know some good deeds they have done.

7. Project Key Points

Generally, you are only given a short span of time to make a good first impression. So it’s worth your effort to give each new encounter your best shot. What you need to do, to make a good impression is mainly common sense. However, with a little extra thought and preparation, you can hone your intuitive style and make every first impression a great one.

TRANSMILE GROUP - A TYPICAL CASE OF NOT FOCUSING ON THE BIG PICTURE

I recently attended the AGM of Transamile Group Berhad, held at The Saujana, on Apr 28, 2010 and like to share with you some of my findings.


There is no doubt that the Management has been working very hard to settle its huge overdue debts and other significant operational issues. However,  I noticed something amissed . They have missed out the BIG Picture of the turnaround plan and its future direction. To me, what the investors are interested to know is the big issue of turning around and the length of period they need to turn around, rather than what they  presented at the AGM. In my personal view, this is a common mistake made by lots of senior professionals who may be too overworked and overstressed.


As a result, I raised these issues to them in the hope that they will open their mindsets and look at more options in order to turn this company, which has certain niche market, around. No doubt, it is a difficult task, but not impossible. They need to have more confidence and stronger faith or at least give my views some consideration, so as to turn the company around and to keep its current staff force.


To my disappointment  my view was not given due consideration and they chose to bull dozed their plan ahead. This does not seemed to be fair to the minority investors because the management may not have explored all the options before arriving to such a conclusion.


In this connection, I also urged them to refocus their attention on these Big and Urgent issues, but in vain. I did not walked out in protest, but listened to their presentation till the end. The key performance indicators such as revenue per nautical km travel, cost per nautical km travel, load capacity and average utilisation hours of each type of aircraft were not available. Reason given by the COO were they were confidential. These key indicators are usually made available in the annual reports of other airlines.


I approached the COO after the AGM  and had a short chat before exchanging business cards with the CEO and CFO. Thereafter, they excused themselves for the press conference.


Consequently,  I contacted the COO and CEO the day after the AGM with the hope of offering them my experience and skill. I am willing to work with them to explore more options to turn around this company, which I believe there is a possibility and not as what they claimed. My intention of offering such help is to keep the company afloat so as to lift up their staff specially and their families members, as the name suggested in this blog.


Secondly, this is another typical case of fixed mindsets, where people refused to explore other possible options before coming to such a conclusion as the above. As such, I published this event in the hope that the management can give it a second thought.

ANOTHER MENTOR OF MINE

Hi! Everyone,

I write to share with you some tremendous great moments I experienced while I was attending this 18th National Achievers Congress 2010 at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, from Apr 23 to 25, 2010.  

What I can say is that I have enjoyed every speech from all these world class renowned speakers that was lined up by Richard Tan and his team from the Success Resources Sdn. Bhd. He is really bringing us World Class Knowledge into three days event, packed with several world class renowned speakers, who came from all over the world. They not only shared their success stories, but also showed passion in coaching whoever who have the need, so as to bring the world to greater heights of success. 

Here, I write to record my sincere thanks to all of them who have made this event successful. Their generous support has made this educational journey not only enriching, but was also full of excitement and enjoyment.

Their gestures and attitudes were so appealing that I decided to step up and signed up for one of the coaching courses that have been lined up for us. The reason I record it this is to reaffirm that result needs action. Action needs energy. So, use your energy appropriately and you will reap its reward. 

In this connection, I write to tell you the good news that there are lots of people out there who always wish to extend their hands to help. So, just step up and seek help if you require help. Today, we are living in the world which is so inter-dependent on each other. There is always a great tendency that someone needs your help and you need others as well especially during our walk of lives. 

One thing I was so fascinated about is the book, Put More Cash in Your Pocket, by this great author -Miss Loral Langemeier. The title caught my immediate attention and I could imagine how wonderful life will be if I could put more cash in my pocket, exactly the way she had demonstrated to us. In the split of a second, I told myself that I must sign up for the course. Thereafter, the message became clearer and clearer as I vet through her book. My inner voice tells me that I can do it as well and urge me to journal it in my blog. Please take a bold action to step up and grasp the opportunity as it arises. You will stay status quo if you ignore or procrastinate about it. So, always stay alert and look for the opportunity, regardless of the state of the economy you are in now.  

One thing I write to share with you is that I couldn't be what I am today if I had not been influenced and impacted by others, especially those great heroes, authors and friends who have given numerous support and courage. One of the common goal what I learn from all these great speakers is that they have the passion to give back their skills, knowledge and experiences to the world they have been benefiting from.

GREEN WAYS TO SAVE

Dear Loving Readers and Visitors,

Contrary to general misconception that you need to spend lots to go green, I am glad to say that you can even save more by going green. I am sure some of you may have heard the clarion calls of; "Global Warming", "Save the Planet", etc. I also must state that to make this "green movement" workable, it must be practical, and economically profitable for the average family. So, if you want to help the planet, you can advise your family and friends how to save money by going green. Below please find some of useful guides you may adopt:-

1.    3R - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

If your house is in desperate need of de-cluttering, clear it out by either donating or selling off the unnecessary items and make some money! So, go through your home, section by section if it is more practicable to you, and sort out items that need to go. Separate these items according to your plan, either to be sold or given to charity. By doing so, you not only clear more space for breathing, but also save the planet by letting other people reuse or recycle those items not useful to you.

If you have a habit of keeping all sorts of stuff in your car, then I have good news for you. The quickest option for you to earn extra money is getting up early at the weekend and head to a car boot sale. Alternatively, you may opt to sell on eBay, especially for those not keen on early mornings or facing the public. For larger items, you may specify that buyers collect them at the comfort of your own home. It is so convenient to turn those unwanted items into instant cash. What's more do you need?  You can do all these through a few clicks of button of your finger. 

For those serviceable items that aren't in good enough condition, you may either sell them or give to the charitable organisations.

2. Minimise Waste

This is another useful mean of saving the environment by reducing waste. Below are some suggestions which you may deploy to reduce waste:-

a) Make it a best practice to check your fridge and cupboards before going shopping. Make a list of what you need, this will not only prevent you from buying too much, but it also helps you to save time and cash. Through this sort of planning, you will save time to go shopping again for items you have missed out or spend time to sort them at a later stage.

b) Be inventive and innovative by using up what is in the fridge before it expires. Adopt first in first out and ensure that the earliest item must be at the top so that it is more convenient for others to remove them first.

c) Cook meals in bulk for both lunch and dinner. This is very common in oriental society, where they cook the dishes for both lunch and dinner.

d)  Put in a bag all your vegetable peelings, tea bags, egg shells, egg boxes, toilet roll tubes, banana peel and coffee grounds -- and the compost can be used to fertilize the garden.

e) Invest and keep a compost bin in your house. This  not only allows you to compost your grass clippings and leaves, but at the same time, you can also put in all of your vegetable peelings, tea bags, egg shells, egg boxes, toilet roll tubes, banana peel and coffee grounds to be used as fertilizer in your garden. You will discover that you are able to recover your investment cost on compost bin through saving on your fertilizer cost. 

3. Generate your own Energy

Renewable energy means energy generated from natural sources such as the wind, turbines, the sun, or sea. In tropical areas, we are generally taking advantage of this renewable energy. One good example is letting our washing dry in the sun, rather than in the tumble dryer. Solar panels are commonly used as well.

I have heard rumours that devices such as wind turbines could be viewed as home improvements that increase the value of your home. However, council tax bills increase unfairly as a result, thus making this alternative no longer attractive.

4. Public Transport or Car pooling

Using public transportation is another significant means of saving the environment if it is practicable for you to do so. Alternatively, you may opt for car pooling so as to reduce the traffic and saving the environment.

ANOTHER MALAYSIA CAN DO SPIRIT

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and first lady Michelle Obama present give away Secretary of State's Award for International Women of Courage to Malaysia's Ambiga Sreenevasan (Malaysian Bar Council) at the State Department in Washington , DC (AFP)

AMAZING AND UNIQUE BRIDGE 9

Hi! Folks,

This is another unique and amazing bridge, which I like to share with you, despite what I told you in my last post last year. 

The bridge is huge and I am not kidding either. It is located in China’s Hubei province and dubbed “Siduhe Grand Bridge“, this gargantuan suspension bridge (once completed) will smash the current record for highest deck-to-ground distance held by the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado (1, 053ft) and could fit the Empire State Building underneath it and still have 360 feet to spare - yikes! But there’s more…

So you’ve erected the enormous towers on each side of the deep valley, deeper than any valley previously bridged. How do you get a pilot cable from one tower to the next? Previous solutions have included: attaching the cable to a kite and flying it over (e.g. Niagara Falls suspension bridge), carrying one end by helicopter (e.g. Akashi Kaikyo bridge) and floating one end on a boat (e.g. Brooklyn Bridge). The brains behind the Siduhe Bridge decided to ignore all those options and break another record instead. They attached the 3,200ft cables to rockets and accurately fired them over the valley, becoming the first people to do so.

So, it tells us to be more innovative and creative to venture into new methods so as to have breakthrough record. Remember that there are always more than one path to success. Be brave and have a mission to set a new record and not indulge into unnecessary worry as the builder who constructs the above bridge. To create a remarkable new record, you must able to face the odds and take up the challenge to step into the uncharted zones. This is exactly like today's world we are living, where people are pushed to create precedents out of the uncharted zones. So, as the time is getting tougher, the tough gets going. Keep moving and you are rest assured that the reward is also equally high proportionate to its risk.

With American economy facing financial tumult, the rest of world are no exception to experience adverse impact one way or the other. As a result, it is normal for you or someone close to you to have lost their jobs and are having difficulties to overcome their emotional feelings. Even if you are not affected, it is no harm for you to be equip and prepare yourselves. Due to rapid changes in the market place, no one is able to predict the future with certainty.  

STAGES OF GRIEF

Losing a job can cause complications because it involves several stages of grief subsequent to that occurrence. We need time to heal especially for those who regard their careers as second to death. With this in mind, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross devised stages of grief as follows:

1. At denial stage, we tend to think that there must have been a mistake. It could not be happening to us. 

2. In anger stage, we insist it is not fair. After all, we viewed ourselves as good and necessary workers who do not deserve this treatment. Why me will arise in the individual mindset? We tend to compare with others and conclude that other co-workers deserve to lose their jobs more than us. Such emotions will put us in the worst mood.

3. At bargaining stage, we try to get back in through the door in number of possible ways.

4. If you are not careful, depression might hit you. Sadness breeds sadness. Eventually, we see darkness everywhere. 

5. At Acceptance stage, we have processed adequately and we acknowledge that we should take care of what we are in control of and do the best we can.

Even though it is helpful to look at the above from five stages listed above, however, each individual may not necessarily go through from one to the next stage. Some might skip over one stage for a while and return back to an “earlier” stage at an even deeper level than before. In short, some might even go back and forth between the stages, deepening the process each time they return. Once, these stages are broken down, it can be used to help us have compassion for ourselves as we go through the difficulties. It tends to give a proven recipe to assist you to have a better understanding on how we are overcoming grief.

1. HAVE THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE 

View it from a wider perspective and accept the fact that you are not alone. Take it as a challenge rather than a mis-fortune. Remember the saying "No pain, no gain." Turn it to an opportunity so that you can use this to help others become wiser, stronger, smarter and more humble. Trust me, the reward is far beyond its costs.

2. BE FAIR TO YOURSELF

Naturally, the very first thought that strike our mind when facing job loss is the loss of income. Worse still, if we are the  sole bread winner with dependents, this can be seriously frightening, devastating, and shameful loss. This is because many of us judge our competency and value by our work life.

3. LOSING MORE THAN YOUR JOB

There are adverse social implications during grieving. How will others look and feel about us especially we are no longer having our jobs. Will we lose touch with them? This will one way or the other lead us to wonder about our future work life. Will we fit in anyplace else?

4. FEAR OF SURVIVAL

If left unchecked, we will have the fear of survival along with these unhealthy thoughts. This will often lead to questions of your capability and competency. Depending on individual background and experience, certain old bondage return to be confronted and many self-worth questions will come to the forefront. This is a good time to get some support from a professional psychotherapist to help ease the sting and removed these wounds. View this as an opportunity to heal some of our old wounds once and for all. It will only set you free. It is also wise for you to take advantage of the support groups, available at your community.

5. TURN IT INTO AN OPPORTUNITY 

The good news is that once you have overcome this initial fear, you will find that the job loss is an opportunity for growing into something that suits you better. This in turn help you feel more stronger and successful in your life. Therefore, be kind to yourselves by eating and sleeping well, exercising, journaling and taking time to refresh yourselves to reflect on your various highly charged thoughts and feelings. If you have given time for yourself, you could have chance to look more closely at what is important to you. So, take your life as it comes and make the best with what you have. This is my sincere desire for all of you. In this instance, you may learn from the book author - Miss Lilou Mace - "I LOST MY JOB AND I LIKED IT".

6. LOOK AND MOVE FORWARD RATHER THAN HARP ON THE PAST

HOW TO HANDLE OBJECTIONS EFFECTIVELY

In life, we can never avoid facing all sorts of objections, be it a personal relationship, business, proposal, etc. What is more important to us now is to learn how to handle these objections well. For those who want to acquire this skill, I am sure it will create some excitement for you. If so, I write to congratulate you because I know you are trying to do a great favour for yourself. However, I can say that this is only first step to overcome them. You also need to put it into practice till you perfect it. Practice, practice and practice, the 3 Ps are the keys to master this skill.

Now sit back, read the following recommended tips and apply them to your daily life whenever you have the opportunity to do so. You have to practice until you perfect it should you want to do something great for yourself. Otherwise, you can stop reading this article. Hope you are not being offended. I am just stating the truth.

1. Choose to agree with their objections

It may sound odd to some of you. It is not an easy task especially when you are not happy with the objections. Pause for a while, think rationally what will happen if you choose otherwise. The chances that you destroy the rapport with your opponent are rather high. Ask yourself again why your opponent raise the objection in the first place. To me, he is just want to either protect himself from making a similar mistake or he just wanted to be heard.

Once, you see this distinction, it is much easier for you to say that you absolutely have the same concern as he did. So, you completely understand why he said all this.

Can you see the difference now? are you able to accept this rationale. If yes, practice it till it become part of you.

2. Listen to the objection attentively

Whatever negative objections said, listen to them attentively till they have finished. This is vitally important especially when your opponent is in angry mood or raised his voice to make himself heard. People are shouting because they want someone to listen to them. Simple. So, do them a favour by offering your ear should you want to be a winner at the end of the day.

I assured you that if you listen to them attentively, they will start to run out of stream. Best still, if you keep agreeing with them, the chances that they begin to trust you are much higher. Slowly and surely they will disclose the real reason behind their objection to you finally. Once, you can overcome this barrier, they will listen to you. This is part of the process. 

3. Understand where the objection came from

Always try to understand which direction the objection was coming from. It is of paramount importance for you to do so, so that you are able to see their concern first, follow by the act of listening to them fully. This will then assist you to raise appropriate question for clarification. Through these simple 3 steps, you are not only able to understand fully where the objection came from, but also the real reason behind their objections. Take up this challenge by giving yourself  a chance to work on it. Once you overcome it, you will understand the true picture completely by asking them material and significant question. 4. Clarify an objection completely

Before you respond to any objection, you need to clarify an objection fully and completely. This means that you need to be sure and understand fully what they mean, even if you have to repeat their phrases, do so by all means. Similarly, they need you to fully understand them before you can ask them more question relevant to their objection. Once, you break through this barrier, you will then be able to offer a solution which truly bring them benefits as the way they see them. Once they see these benefits, I won't see any reason why they don't take up the solution you offered to them.

The more you put them into practice, the better you will be. Once you have master this skill, you will able to predict what objections to be expected and how to overcome every one of them with full confidence and certainty.
