Today, the news on the above topic in our local newspapers caught my immediate attention that made me pen down this memorial event in this blog. There are several reasons for me to record this news as a different perspective, in hoping to inspire you, which is the main pillar of this blog.

Our local celebrity, Daphne Iking is not a stranger here and need no introduction. However, for the benefit of some who may not know her, especially my foreign blog readers. As such, I promised not to bore you with bundle of her history, but a short and quick brief of her.

What made her in the headlines recently was due to her controversy over a suit brought by her husband, Ryan Chong, against businessman Darren Choy for seducing her, with the intention of having sexual intercourse between July 2007 and September 2008.

This time, this celebrity has made another headlines again for a much more memorable and happier reason - she has married for a second time. Her Mr. Right is her one- time business partner Azmi Abdul Rahman according to the News.

Her brave action toward achieving happier life is commendable here. Firstly, it reaffirms that love is colourless. Secondly, it also very encouraging and praiseworthy to see her not given up despite having some adversities along the journey. Her cheerful look, despite having facing a storm well indicates that she is a forward looking person. Here, we wish this newly couple great success in their marriage.

What is the most commendable to me in their action is inter faith marriage. We should not only welcome this positive step but also encourage because it is working toward a United Malaysia, truly 1Malaysia. It is a far more than a slogan. This vision should be vivid in every Malaysian's soul should as he is truly working towards building a healthier and stronger nation, we all looking forward to.

In this connection, we at this blog urge every reader to build a united force, regardless of races and backgrounds, by working and enjoying our success together in heading toward a more progressive, healthier and stronger nation so that we have a better life for our future generations.

I read this news reported in the article, Pearl of the Orient shines bright, by Dawn Jeremiah with deep delight. I strongly believe it was a long awaited article for a great majority of Penang folks, especially those who have read or seen its beauty and old world charm. The risk of making the turn is beginning to pay off. The wind of change finally begins to bear fruits. Such reward with such a short span of time proves that it must be with the cooperation of great majority of its people. Well done, Penang.

According to the author, Gary McKechnie, Penang is ranked  as in his Top 10 hot spots. To be exact, no. 8 after the other following spots-

2) Vieques in Puerto Rio,
3) Easter Island in Chile,
4) Ischia in Italy,

Undeniably, Pennag has so much to offer to the whole world, be it to Westerners, Indians, Chinese, Malay and Middle Easterners due to its fusion of culture, so unique and distinct from the rest of the world, if you truly appreciate its value. I believe my statement is objective and not biased and it is not because it's where originate from.

Its' prosperity lies behind its diversity - it has everything and anything to please its guests such as City, beach, ferry, bridge, heritage buildings, hill, dam, jungle and forests you name it, it has it.

FOREVER YOUNG GRANDMA OF TELUK INTAN

Hi! Everyone,

Trust you will love the new dress of this famous Grandma, Menara Condong, Teluk Intan, Perak.

Lately it has been 'dressed up' in purple hues - pretty in purple so to speak. I am sure you will agree with me that it still looks very sexy and attractive. Right?

Its background

This equivalent to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, is situated right  at the heart of the Teluk Intan town centre.  Similar to its Italian counterpart, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan has a leftward slant, and all the ingredients to make it an architectural sight to behold. It is the pride of Teluk Intan or formerly known as Teluk Anson.

Standing proudly with the height of 8 different levels of 25.5 meters, but actually divided into only three storeys. Amazing, right? When it was first built, its structure was straight however it began to tilt about 1.8 metre towards Jalan Bandar between 1889 and 1895, due to the weight of its water tank.

Teluk Intan Leaning Tower ( Menara Condong Teluk Intan )

This pagoda-like structure was built by the Chinese contractor named Mr. Leong Choon Choong, in 1885. It was used initially as a covered water tank for 800 Teluk Intan residents at that time. During the Japanese Occupation, it was then be used as an observation post for the Japanese Army. Subsequently, it became headquarters for the Boys Scouts.

These days, it just function as the clock and tourist center. Its clock tower’s caretaker will wind up the clock’s mechanism using a crank every Wednesday. Commissioned in London, the clock chimes twice every 15 minutes. Its' old yet sexy voice can be heard as far as eight kilometres in radius especially at night. Come and hear it yourself. To get to Teluk Intan from the North-South Expressway, exit at Bidor Interchange and proceed to the road leading to Teluk Intan. The Tower is easily accessible through Jalan Selat. Have a blessed journey.

Your body needs natural sunlight to get enough vitamin D. And according to my friend Al Sears, MD, getting just 10-15 minutes of sunshine a day is crucial to good health and vibrant, youthful skin. But don’t go overboard because too much of this good thing can wreck your skin, speed up your aging, and even lead to more serious skin problems.

5. Moisturize your ears.

 

Believe or not, ear lobes show your age! Do you have a cute little dot where your ear lobe is pierced or a stretched-out slash mark? Always include your earlobes when applying moisturizer and makeup. Opt for extremely lightweight earrings and never sleep in them.

Her secret: she never wears earrings unless she is out and about.

6. Eat frequent, small meals.

 

Don’t go too many hours without eating. Having three smallish meals and two snacks throughout the day can keep your blood sugar and energy levels stable all day long, says Roberta Anding, R.D., a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

7. Exfoliate.

You get an entirely new set of skin cells every 30 days, so it’s important to exfoliate. This way you don’t hide fresh skin under dead, gray cells. She suggest using a homemade exfoliant once a month. All you have to do is make a paste of fresh papaya or pineapple in your food 

processor and spread it on your face for about 10 minutes, and then rinse it off. Both papaya and pineapple contain natural enzymes, which help to get rid of dead skin cells. Plus, they’re all natural!

8. Limit facial washing.

As you age, over-washing your face can strip skin of essential oils, exacerbating the natural dryness of aging skin. Many forces affect your skin: sun, weather, lifestyle, diet, genetics and our own bad habits. Plus as you get older, you lose oil glands that can cause dry, itchy skin. Anything that further dries the skin, such as over-use of soaps or extremely hot water can make the problem worse.

Her secret: On days that she don’t wear makeup, she sometimes wash her face without soap. She use just plain water splashed liberally on her face and pat dry (never rub).

9. Pamper your lips.

 

Smooth lips represent youth. You can exfoliate lips by gently brushing them with a soft toothbrush, minus the toothpaste, of course. Lips have skin, too, which means they need exfoliating just like any other part of the body. But don’t be too zealous – the skin on the lips is delicate. 

Her secret: she keeps a separate toothbrush just for lips. She always buys the same color, so she can remember which brush is for teeth and which one is for lips.

10. Join a yoga class.

RESTORING PENANG'S GLORY

Greetings from Penang, Malaysia. Read more on this Jewel of the Orient.

IN my recent trip back to Penang to celebrate Chinese New Year, this impressive and effective decoration at the Glugor roundabout caught my immediate attention. Immediately, I requested my wife to snap a photo. See for yourselves, the appended photo below.

This decoration had triggered a reminder of my promise to blog more on these heritage buildings. As such, I found it very catchy and in line with its prestigious award from Unesco. Long live Penang.

I believe that if everyone do their part, no matter how small or big, it will surely restore the Island's glory at the end of the day. That belief drives me to do my part, which I always believe "Action speaks louder than words".

After our New Year lunch at RedHot restaurant, I decided to take my family for a quick tour around and snap as many photos as possible so as to prove my point that they are very serious of restoring its glory. Here, I write to wish the State every success.

In this article, I decided to let you have a first look at various photos that my son have taken along the places we passed by. Seeing is believing and I hope you do agree with my observation. Please give me your feedback regardless whether you agree or disagree with me.

Before I forget, I write to update you some of significant facts of the recent achievements by this State and at the same time, thanks you for your past support that make the following achievement possible.

a) For the first time in history, Penang is now the new champion of investments in Malaysia, coming out top in 2010. Penang replaced the previous 2009 champion Sarawak by recording RM 12.2 billion in 2010 as compared to Sarawak RM3.9 billion. Penang was No. 4 in 2009 with RM 2.1 billion but shot up 5 times to No.1. On the other hand Sarawak went down from No.1 in 2009 with RM 8.5 billion to No. 4 with RM3.9 billion in 2010. 

b) It is also being praised by the Auditor-General Report for being the best financially managed state with record surpluses of RM88 million in 2008 and RM77 million in 2009. Penang became the first state government in history to be commended by Transparency International for CAT(Competency, Accountability and Transparency) governance in establishing integrity in leadership.

c) I also was made to understand that it has also wiped out hard-core poverty, the first state to do so in Malaysia.

d) Penang is going green and leading in green practices such as "No Free Plastic Bag" campaigns and waste treatment through 3R of Reduce, Reuse Recycle. Penang enjoys the cheapest water rates in the country. Penang is also the Silicon Valley of Malaysia and selected as the most livable city in Malaysia on par with Kuala Lumpur. 

And last, but not least you continuously support is greatly appreciated. So, let us grow together, learn from each other and enjoy the success together. Hence, I write to sum up this article with the speech from its Chief Minister as follow:-

WHAT INSPIRING DRINK ? PANDA LATTE

Hi! A very warm welcome to this blog,

I believe some of you may be aware that the two lovely young pandas are heading to Japan from China. The good news is that the panda fever is spreading throughout Japan.We believe this gesture will normalize the relationship between these two giant economies, being the second and third largest economies.

Now, Panda flags lined streets near the capital's Ueno Zoo, which is to become the home of the pair of 5 year-old giant pandas for the next decade. Whereas television channels also had breathlessly given broad coverage of these much welcome VVIPs. Look out for All Nippon Airlines jet that painted white with black spots, well reflected the colour of these VVIPs. This special and happy transport arrangement will make this event even more glorified and colourful. This great gesture truly reflected the appreciation of preserving this nearly extinct animals in this planet, which I believe will be welcome especially by animal lovers and environmental groups . Hence, we are very glad to see that  the law of nature is well respected in today's modern technological world.

The male of this pair is named Bili while the female is Xiannu. Can someone tell us the meaning of these two names? How they derive these names. The zoo is expecting a visitors' boom with the arrival of these lovely pair of pandas. See the result at the later stage. Now you can find Panda latte at Ueno Green Saloon restoraunt in Tokyo's Ueno district. Wow, what are other newly recipe/ item being created? Be vigilant and please report to us more about this remarkable and unforgotten event, that gives hope to those involved parties.

BEST SELLING AUTHOR AT 99 - TOYO SHIBATA

Dear viewers,

Recently, I read about an author, who started writing when she was 92 and she just celebrated her 100th birthday. She is none other than TOYO Shibata. This Japanese writer who writes about love, dreams and hanging on hope may not need introduction to some of you.

Although I have not read her poem, I understand her's anthology entitled Kujikenaide (Don't Lose Heart), has sold more than 1.5 million copies in Japan since its publication, in late 2009. Amazing, right?

For those who have read the above poems, please tell us more about her poems in the comment column provided below. Thank you in advance for your kind participation. It is important for us to know this great author in the hope that more people can follow her footstep.

Her poems, with uplifting titles such as Everyone's Dreams Are Equal and Take It Easy, Don't Try Too Hard, was also described by her peers as an expression of gratitude to the people who have cared for her during her twilight years. We find this author so unique and meaningful. 

A TV documentary about her in December 2010, after the anthology reached the mark of 1.5 million, fueled interest in her work. It is worthy to note that sales of about 10,000 copies are considered a success for poetry anthologies in Japan.

What is her success recipe? She attributed it to her son, now in his mid-60s. She was encouraged to write poetry by her son, after her recurring back pain forced her to give up her life-ling hobby of classical Japanese dance.

This is another case in point that demonstrates well that adversity is not an end, but rather a turning point. As such, it reminds us when we are hit by adversity, do not give up, just like Toyo. But follow your heart and pick up something you really love. Just do it regardless of your age or any other justification which may caused you to give up. In this instance, wish Toyo long life.

I am very impressed with her success and that made me pen down this article so as to put it on my record and drives me to follow her footstep.

In this connection, I decided to continue to write articles in this blog. I hope my commitment can reach Miss Toyo who has touched my life so much, and I am really indebted to her.

Dear friends,


The email below touched me so much that I decided to share with you.


A friend of mine opened his wife's underwear drawer and picked up a silk paper wrapped package:

'This, - he said - isn't any ordinary package.'

He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box.

'She got this the first time we went to New York , 8 or 9 years ago. She has never put it on , was saving it for a special occasion.

Well, I guess this is it.

He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral house, his wife had just died.

He turned to me and said:

'Never save something for a special occasion.

Every day in your life is a special occasion'.

I still think those words changed my life.

Now I read more and clean less.

I sit on the settee without worrying about anything and just relax.

I spend more time with my family & friends and less at work.


Money is to be spent not saved.

I understood that life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not survived through.


I no longer keep anything.

I use crystal glasses every day.

I'll wear new clothes to go to the supermarket, if I feel like it.

I don't save my special perfume for special occasions, I use it whenever I want to.


I go out with my friends whenever I want to rather than thinking I don't have the spare money or time.

The words 'Someday...' and ' One Day...' are fading away from my dictionary.

If it's worth seeing, listening or doing, I want to see, listen or do it now...

I don't know what my friend's wife would have done if she knew she wouldn't be there the next morning, this nobody can tell.

I think she might have called her relatives and closest friends.


She might call old friends to make peace over past quarrels.  


She might have told everyone how much she loved them.

I'd like to think she would go out for Chinese, her favourite food.

It's these small things that I would regret not doing, if I knew my time had come..

Each day, each hour, each minute, is special.

Live for today, for tomorrow is promised to no-one.

If you got this, it's because someone cares for you and because, probably, there's someone you care about.

If you're too busy to share this out with other people and you say to yourself that you will share it 'One of these days' , remember that 'One day' is far away... or might never come...

Very Happy Chinese New Year! Everyone,

The Hokkeins community has just celebrated Praying to the Thni Kong (Emperor Jade's birthday) on 11 Feb, 2011. READ MORE ON http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jade_Emperor

I believe some of you may be aware that this ninth day of the Chinese New Year is a very auspicious and significant day to Hokkeins, one of the clans of the Chinese communities. This day is a memorable day and this practice has been carried through many generations. There are several sources of obtaining such information, either from our parents as I did, or other sources such as from books, newspapers or internet.

As such, I decided to pen down this memorable day in this blog, so as to pass this information to our future generations, at the same time to enlighten some of my blog's readers and visitors. I remember vividly that in those days, I also chipped in to obtain cookies and other deity items for my mother. The eighth day of the Chinese New Year, we were busy to get the 'must items' from the morning till very late at night. When the hand of the clock strikes 12, you can hear fire crackers everywhere in Georgetown for this is when the ceremony began. You may choose to celebrate either in big or small scale. Most of the time, we prayed, just outside of our house in a small scale, except for the year where my belated father passed away.

My belated father migrated from Nan Aun, Fujian Province when he was a teenager, after he managed to obtain the necessary travel documents to do so. My grandfather and his eldest son came to Penang much earlier. My father had managed to visit his hometown, to meet up with his younger brothers and his relatives before he passed away. As such, he had established a link for us to trace back our root/ancestors. Whereas my mother is a local.

Please let us know know your side of the story to make this article more lively. As far as my family is concerned, we have practiced till today. As a child, we were taught to be graceful to others who have helped/ touched us in anyway. Similarly, this historical event is central on the gratitude, which has been carried down from generation to generations. 

According to my belated father, our ancestors from Fujian province survived persecution from the Sung Dynasty soldiers by hiding in a sugar cane plantation on Chinese New Year for nine consecutive days. To express their highest gratitude to the Thni Kong ( Jade Emperor), they offered sugarcane since then, as a must item to the Jade Emperor on this day. This is how sugarcane plays such a significant role in this festival till to-date. Other offering items included roast pork and the must-haves such as ang koo (red tortoise pure buns), mee koo ( red-coloured buns), huat kuih (prosperous cakes), ting tak ( sugar pagodas). Here, I am curious to know as how the other items were drawn in. Appreciate if anyone can enlighten me in this aspect. Please do so in the comment column provided below. Thank you in advance.

Till today, at the stroke of midnight, a day preceding the ninth day, majority of Hokkein households, around George Town and other town areas in Malaysia, set up communal altars in front of their homes to pay homage to the deity. The question arises here is whether similar practice have been performed in other parts of the world. On this day, some may also invite their friends, relatives and business associates to their sweet home to dine after the prayers.  I was told that some of them had migrated to Malacca, Malaysia during the early 1400 BC when the Princess Hang Li Po married the Sultan at that time. That's how the Nyonya clan was formed.
