Now, let us acknowledge the fact of dwindling natural resources and man-made damage to the environment, today, more and more people have recognized the importance of reducing the environmental impact. However, to make it a sustainable practice, many people do not have clues where to begin. Therefore, listed below, are some proposed actionable steps that may be taken to reduce impact on the environment.

1. Make it a point to set realistic goals and make small changes over time

Building a sustainable practice requires us to embed it into our habit. Therefore, we can't deny that setting realistic sustainable goals and benchmarks is the key to success. So, replacing your household's energy use to solar power is a wise move. You can start to reduce your household's energy consumption by changing simple daily behaviors such as turning out the lights when not in use. All these small positive changes have great long-term impact on the environment. This is not rocket science, but numbers game. Imagine the world population of more than 6.0 billion people, each making the small changes.

2.    Make sustainable practice a core part of your vision and values

Changing our practices and behaviors to become more environmentally responsible require a commitment and conviction of our hearts. Therefore, sustainability must be a core part of our vision and values. Thus, this requires integrating sustainable goals and practices into our overall strategy and committing to actual change. It is important to carry out the plan so as to materialise the plan.

3.    Actively participate in these noble activities that bring awareness to the mass population

Since scientific evidence is now overwhelming: climate change is a serious global threat, and it demands urgent and collective response. Therefore, it is time for us to show our undivided commitment to environmental responsibility by actively participating in these events and causes. You may choose to volunteer in the community or make donations to charity or a cause, so as to make it happen. Everyone 's effort, money and time is very important to these noble activities.

4.    Modify your purchasing decisions

Reducing the environmental impact may require us to modify our purchasing decisions to be more responsible. For instance, consider replacing your dry cell supplies with rechargeable batteries or purchasing clothes that do not need to be dry cleaned. The latter cuts down on toxic chemical uses as dry cleaning uses organic solvent rather water and these organic solvent known as perc, is classified as a hazardous air contaminant by the United States Environment Protection Agency.

5.    Share your environmental accomplishments with your circle of influence, both online and offline

Sharing the good news about how you make a positive difference in the environment will improve public perception of you. Don’t keep your environmental accomplishments a secret. Share the news with the public whenever there is an opportunity for you to do so. This is because we have reached a level that is too late to prevent the climate change that have been taking place. However, it is still possible to protect the earth, as a  whole, from its impacts to some extent.

6.    Changing our lifestyle to a more healthy one

These can be done through numerous means. For instance by cutting meat intake. Studies have shown producing 2.2 pounds of meats causes the emission of 80 pounds of carbon dioxide, Pachauri told a press conference. Next, you can also change your way of travelling to walking and biking, if practicable. These mean more savings and better health. As we always say, prevention is better than cure.

7.    Lobbying local governments to increase environmental activities

You may lobby your local government to increase spending on sidewalks and bikes lane, providing better facilities for walkers and bikers. With such little costs, these improvements can pay huge dividends in bettering your health and reducing traffic in the long term.

The above discussion has clearly illustrated that little changes you and I make will make a huge difference to the environment both short and long term. So what are we waiting for? After all, you have nothing to lose, but lots to gain. Let us unite and act now so as to leave behind a good legacy for the coming generations.

I beg you to work with us. Thank you in advance for your kind co-operation.
